My birthday's two days away; I'll finally be sixteen. But instead of feeling happy about it, I feel...depressed. For one, even if I will be old enough to drive, my folks will never let me do it.

And my folks are mad at each other, too. They get like this every two months or so, I swear! And they take days before talking it out...only to throw it up in another fight (my dad is really good at opening old wounds, whether he's aware of this or not). The worst part is that my mom is hardly ever home, so he makes my brothers and me miserable, with reminders of how useless we are, and empty threats to leave us and run away to Thailand. And I'm always in the middle, being the helpless confidant for them both (they probably wouldn't have stopped their last fight if my mom hadn't taken my advice).

With everything going on, I won't be surprised if no one in my family remembers. I won't bother to remind them, either, lest they accuse me of being "selfish in times of crisis". If worst comes to worst, I'll just buy a moon pie, stick a candle in it, and celebrate by myself.
